My Journal of OMGs—First Edition
Last Fall I decided to focus my blogs on helping to save our Democracy. When home and not traveling (I’m retired) I monitor lots of news feeds each day. When I see something consistent with this new goal, I print it and toss it into a file for possible later use. Recently I began keeping an almost daily journal of what I call OMGs — items that may not make it into a blog but are relevant nonetheless. Some days the feeds explode with feces from the sewer. Here is the first week of OMGs. I will mingle these into my traditional blog publishing.
(My add-ons and pithy comments are in italics.)

A Republican lawmaker from Tennessee said today that Hitler was an example of a homeless person making good.
I guess that means, be more like Hitler.
In the race to the bottom, Kentucky reached the lowest of any state in banning abortions. Being raped while a prisoner of sex traffickers was added to the mandates of carrying a child of rape to full-term.
Governor DeSantis signed a law prohibiting abortions after 15-weeks of pregnancy. Separately, he proposed a new House redistricting map.
A video from Grand Rapids, Michigan has surfaced showing a cop shooting a Black man in the back of the head after a stop for an expired license plate.
Someone explain to me why the man wasn’t just reported to the Michigan DMV and then sent a notice of the expiration? Macho men. I do not care if he resisted. He is dead because of an expired license plate. Oh, and did I say he was Black, and an immigrant from the Congo?
Former Republican Stuart Spencer, and former campaign strategist for Mitt Romney in 2012, said today that there are two parties: “The choice is between democracy and autocracy.”
The RNC announced that the Republican candidate for president will no longer participate in any debate they cannot control.
Okay, they did not say, “cannot control,” but that is the intent. No doubt they want to see and approve the questions in advance. See above quote about our choice being between democracy and autocracy.
Meanwhile polls show Republicans are ahead in most head-to-head polling. People are choosing autocracy. They just do not know what it means.

More on the DeSantis new district mapping. In 2020, Trump carried 15 out of the 27 Florida Congressional districts, about a 56% advantage. Trump won the popular vote 51.7% to 48.3% — 3.4 percentage points. Under the DeSantis mapping, Republicans would control 20 seats to only 8 by Democrats, or a 71% Republican advantage. (Florida picked up a seat in the new census.)
Nebraska Republican gubernatorial candidate, Charles Herbster, has been accused groping by eight women. One accuser is Republican State Senator, Julie Slama.
According to Fox and Friends, people who still wear masks have psychosis.
Apparently, this would include everyone still traveling on an airplane. I’m not sure I want to be on a plane full of psychotics. It is a good thing guns are not allowed in the passenger section. No doubt the NRA will target that rule next.
This from the Daily Kos web site: “Author Jason Tharp was banned from reading his book It’s Okay to Be a Unicorn! to students at an elementary school in an Ohio school district, after a principal called with concerns that the book would ‘recruit’ students’ to become gay. I just straight up asked him, ‘Does somebody think I made a gay book?’ Tharp told The Washington Post. And he said, ‘Yes.’” Tharp “told the Post he developed the unicorn character to remind his readers that ‘it’s okay to be different.’”
The message is, you will not be different, you will not be gay. You will not say “gay.” You will do as I say. You will not eat green eggs and ham. You will conform to the white man.
This, today, from Raw Story: “Florida Bans 28 Math Textbooks in a Panic Over Critical Race Theory.”
This number was later significantly increased to 41% of all math books. Part of this was the ban of 71% of math book for K-5 grades. Now that we know that Florida is also banning math books, wait until they begin looking at science books, like biology. It won’t be long before the only instruction children can receive is in Sunday School class. Which, besides cults, is the only known indoctrination system in the country.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s latest political stunt to prove his Trumpian credentials was sucked into a Rio Grande sump hole, but not before he hammered the U.S. and Texas economies and cleared Texas grocery shelves of produce. The current loss estimate to fruit and vegetable producers is $240 million. (This is the lowest estimate I have seen to date.) Not estimated yet is the loss in wages of workers, and added inflation at the grocery stores.
Remember when the Texas grid crashed, Texans froze to death, and were price gouged? Gov. Abbott just needs a Costello to go with his comedy tour. But no one is laughing.

This from the MSNBC web site: “Back in January, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin set up an email ‘tip line‘ for snitches — I mean, parents — to rat out educators teaching so-called ‘divisive subjects,’ his non-subtle codeword for lesson plans addressing social inequality.
So far Youngkin has refused to disclose any of the ‘tips’ he has received. Several media entities have filed Freedom of Information lawsuits. One suit alleges that Youngkin has shared the tips with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.”
If you can control the information, you can control the media.
A Crooks and Liars web site headline today: “Ultra-Rich to America: Happy Tax Weekend, Suckers!”
ProPublica, an investigative journalistic outfit in the public interest, did a deep dive into tons of IRS data. Upshot is that if you receive a W-2, you will owe federal taxes close to whatever income level you fall within. The ultra-rich do not receive W-2 forms, and thus pay very little income taxes.
For instance, “from 2014–2018, the 25 wealthiest Americans grew about $400 billion richer, according to Forbes. To an economist, this is income, but under tax law it is vapor, irrelevant. And so this group…paid federal taxes of about 3.4% on $400 billion.” ProPublica calls “this the group’s true tax rate.”

This from the Raw Story web site: “On Friday evening, the Wisconsin Supreme Court reversed course and chose new political maps decided by the Republican-held legislature– extending the state’s strict partisan gerrymander for another ten years.
March 1, the state Supreme Court decided Wisconsin’s new political dividing lines in a 4–3 decision. Conservative Justice Brian Hagedorn sided with the court’s liberals in choosing maps proposed by Gov. Tony Evers — which included an added majority-minority district in Milwaukee.
On March 23, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state court’s decision on Wisconsin’s legislative maps, saying there needed to be more proof to justify the added majority-minority district.”
Conservative Justice Hagedorn flipped and sided with the Republicans, thus blocking the addition of a new Black district in Milwaukee, which was based on the recent census. This is blatant racism by both the Supreme Court and the Wisconsin state court.
This from the Daily Kos web site: “In response to a mid-March announcement by Citigroup Inc. that it would begin covering travel expenses for its employees living in states that limited or nearly banned abortions, a Texas lawmaker has threatened to block the bank’s ability to underwrite municipal bonds in the state, The New York Times reports.”
This headline today from the Talking Points Memo web site: “Trump Appointed Judge Finds CDC Lacks Power…To Control Spread of Disease. Emphasis on sarcasm. This follows months of lobbying by airlines and Republicans in Congress to kill mandated masks on public transportation.”
The suit was brought by an organization called the Health Freedom Defense Fund, which actually means The Fund to Do Whatever It Takes to Block Anything a Democratic Administration Tries to Do. This judge was 33 when appointed by Trump, 8 years after graduating from law school, but was confirmed by McConnell and the Senate even after Trump had lost the 2020 election. The American Bar Association rated her unqualified, partly because she had never even set foot in a courtroom.
Yet, she gets to decide who lives and who dies. My wife and I will now become rebellious. My wife and I will continue to wear a mask when we fly. As a side note, my wife just returned from a flight to Florida to visit her sister. She was one of a few who wore a mask. Meanwhile, the new variant cases have doubled in the last two weeks.
As for that April 15th Fox and Friends comment that people who wear masks on planes are psychotic, apparently those who will no longer wear one have been instantly cured of psychosis. It must have been either the Ivermectin or the horse dewormer.

The Abbott Comedy Tour continues. Talking Points Memo had this today: “Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) told Fox News Host Sean Hannity on Monday evening, ‘I can do whatever I want, and nobody can stop me,.’”
He was referring to the border with Mexico and threatened to order another blockade if Mexico doesn’t do what he wants. If this sounds eerily familiar, remember Trump saying: “Article II gives me the right to whatever I want.”
This from a Michigan Democratic State Senator fighting a GOP smear of her, “We will not let hate win.”
This sounds like a rallying cry for Democrats to use this fall.
Today, this from Paul Krugman in the New York Times, “When the people are suffering, you don’t try to solve their problems; instead, you distract them by giving them someone to hate.”
Let us call it what it is: The Republican Party, the party of hate.
April 20, 2022
From Michael Hiltzek of the Los Angeles Times writing about the judge lifting the wearing of masks on public transportation: “Consider the aftermath of the April 2 Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, at which elite government insiders rubbed shoulders with elite journalists. Of the several hundred attendees celebrating the freedom to cavort without masks or social distancing, at least 72 came down with COVID over the following few days.
We know this because the victims are high-profile officials and media stars. The toll among kitchen workers and other staff who were also exposed to the virus during the dinner is unreported.”
Given the ages of my wife and I, there is so much that could take us out, including accidents not caused by us. We will continue to wear a mask at the gym, grocery stores, CVS, and airplanes. We have a choice. We choose life.
Raw Story has this headline based on a story from Bloomberg News: “U.S. sets an all-time record for oil exports.” Then this: “Energy and commodities writer Javier Blas at Bloomberg News revealed that, this week, the United States hit an all-time record of crude and refined oil products it is exporting. Only twice in history has the number jumped above 10 million barrels per day and this week captured one of those days, setting the record.”
We do not have a supply problem, we have an unfettered capitalism problem. For those who championed the Keystone pipeline as the solution to rising oil prices, where was that pipeline headed? To New Orleans. Why was it going there? To be exported to the highest bidder. Idiots. Another class you skipped or flunked — the economics’ class explaining capitalism.
